‘RESURFACED VIDEO’ AND EPSTEIN FILES FIGHT PUT TRUMP AND HOUSE GOP IN THE HOT SEAT

A disturbing old clip, a long-dormant lawsuit and a new showdown over the Jeffrey Epstein files are colliding in Washington – and putting former President Donald Trump and nervous Republicans under fresh scrutiny.

In recent days, progressive commentators have been circulating a resurfaced video of a woman identifying herself as “Katie Johnson,” who in 2016 filed – and later dropped – a civil lawsuit accusing Trump and Jeffrey Epstein of sexually assaulting her when she was 13. In the video, she claims Trump knew her age and “took a liking” to her because she reminded him of his daughter Ivanka.

The accusations are not new. They’ve been part of the online anti-Trump ecosystem for nearly a decade. But they’re getting a new look now for one reason: Congress is suddenly arguing about how much of the Epstein record the public should see – and whose reputations could be scorched if everything comes out.

Old lawsuit, unresolved questions

The “Katie Johnson” case has a complicated history. In 2016, a woman using that pseudonym filed a civil complaint in federal court alleging that Trump and Epstein raped her at Epstein’s Manhattan residence when she was 13.

The lawsuit was quickly dismissed in California on procedural grounds, refiled in New York under “Jane Doe,” and then voluntarily withdrawn by the plaintiff before any trial or judgment on the facts. Trump repeatedly denied the accusations. No criminal conviction or civil finding has ever established these specific claims as true.

More recently, investigative pieces have questioned whether “Katie Johnson” was ever clearly identified or verified by independent reporters, noting that attorneys and journalists often dealt with her through intermediaries and that her disappearance from public view left many loose ends.

That hasn’t stopped critics from using the resurfaced clip as emotional ammunition – especially as Trump’s name continues to appear in newly released Epstein-related documents, even though he has not been charged with any Epstein-related crimes.

Trump’s own words on women and his daughter

Fueling the outcry is something that is firmly on the record: Trump’s long history of highly sexualized comments about women – including his own daughter Ivanka.

In a 2006 appearance on The View, Trump famously said, “If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her,” prompting immediate discomfort from the hosts. In multiple interviews with Howard Stern, he described Ivanka as “voluptuous” and agreed when Stern referred to her as a “piece of ass.”

On top of that, Trump has publicly boasted about walking unannounced into the dressing rooms of pageant contestants at Miss USA and Miss Universe – pageants he owned – while they were getting ready. “I’ll go backstage before a show and everyone’s getting dressed… no men are anywhere, and I’m allowed to go in because I’m the owner of the pageant,” he told Stern in 2005.

Separately, several former Miss Teen USA contestants have alleged that Trump entered their dressing room while they were changing as teenagers, claims his campaign denied at the time.

None of this proves the specific allegations made in the “Katie Johnson” lawsuit. But for critics, the resurfaced clip, combined with years of Trump’s own on-camera comments, paints what they call a deeply unsettling picture – one they’re now tying directly to the fight over the Epstein files.

Epstein files fight: Massie’s warning shot

That fight is being led, somewhat unexpectedly, by a Republican.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has become the face of a bipartisan push to force the Justice Department to release as many Epstein-related documents as possible, with protections for victims’ identities. He and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna have used a rare discharge petition to compel a House vote on their “Epstein Files Transparency Act,” putting GOP leadership – and Trump – in an uncomfortable spotlight.

Massie has publicly warned fellow Republicans that voting against full disclosure will look like something far worse than ordinary party loyalty. “Donald Trump can protect you in red districts right now by giving you an endorsement,” he said on national TV, “but in 2030, he’s not going to be the president, and you will have voted to protect pedophiles if you don’t vote to release these files… The record of this vote will last longer than Donald Trump’s presidency.”

Those are remarkably blunt words from a sitting Republican about a Republican president. And they’re landing at the exact moment progressive hosts are replaying every uncomfortable Trump quote about women – and tying him, rhetorically at least, to Epstein’s world.

The White House, for its part, has tried to have it both ways: Trump has called parts of the Epstein controversy a “hoax,” floated investigations targeting Democrats’ ties to Epstein, and only lately signaled conditional support for releasing more files after weeks of pressure from his own base.

A political Rorschach test

For Trump’s fiercest critics, the resurfaced Katie Johnson clip is confirmation of what they’ve believed for years. They point to the lawsuit’s allegations, Trump’s pageant behavior, his public comments about Ivanka and a long list of other women who have accused him of misconduct, and say the pattern is undeniable.

For his staunchest supporters, it’s just the latest in a line of recycled hit pieces: a dropped civil case with no trial, amplified by hostile media and weaponized in the middle of a high-stakes fight over releasing files that could embarrass elites in both parties.

And in the middle sit a lot of uneasy Republicans on Capitol Hill – people who may like Trump’s policies, rely on his endorsement, and yet now have to cast a recorded vote on whether to pry open the Epstein archive, knowing that Thomas Massie and others are already framing “no” as a vote to shield predators.

Where this goes next

There are a few hard facts in a sea of spin:

The Katie Johnson/Jane Doe lawsuit was filed, refiled and then withdrawn without any court ever ruling on whether its allegations were true or false.

Trump has denied those accusations and has not been criminally charged in connection with them.

Trump’s own on-camera remarks about Ivanka and about barging into pageant dressing rooms are real and on tape.

Congress really is moving toward a recorded vote on how much of the Epstein record the public will get to see.

Everything else – from YouTube monologues to viral memes to resurfaced clips – is politics layered on top.

Whether this latest storm marks a turning point for Trump’s standing or just becomes another 48-hour eruption in an already exhausted news cycle will depend on two things: what, if anything, new comes out of the Epstein files – and how many Republicans decide that shielding anyone connected to Epstein, even indirectly, simply isn’t worth their name on a “no” vote.

For now, one reality is inescapable: between a resurfaced accuser, uncomfortable old tapes and a looming vote on Epstein’s world, the uneasy overlap of Trump, sex-abuse scandals and Republican politics is back on center stage – and this time, some of the toughest questions are coming from inside his own party.
