Andre Bell, affectionately known as “Dre,” just 20 years old, lost his life following a senseless shooting on Interstate I-65 North.

Dre’s story is not only about an unresolved act of violence, but about a short life filled with light, compassion, and purpose — a life taken far too soon, leaving profound grief for his family, friends, and the broader HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) community.
Adding to the heartbreak, Andre Bell was the grandson of Bart Starr, the legendary quarterback who led the Green Bay Packers to victories in Super Bowls I and II and remains one of the most beloved figures in franchise history.
The bond between grandfather and grandson was deep and enduring. From a young age, Bart Starr shared stories of football, life, and perseverance with Dre, inspiring his love for sports and values that extended far beyond the field. They remained closely connected throughout Dre’s life, united by mutual respect, faith, and passion.
Andre Bell was born on December 2, 2005, in Jackson, Tennessee. He was the eldest son of Amber Lewis and Bradley Lewis, and a devoted big brother to Malcom and Elijah. From an early age, Dre stood out for his maturity, sense of responsibility, and genuine care for others.
After graduating from Sacred Heart of Jesus High School in 2024, Dre chose Fisk University to pursue a degree in Business Administration. There, he became a key member of the Fisk Bulldogs, bringing energy, leadership, and relentless effort to the court.

Those who knew him consistently described Dre as a “young, bright, and gentle young man.” Beyond basketball, he was deeply involved in volunteer work, regularly giving back to the Nashville community, especially to children. His warmth, optimism, and radiant smile made people feel instantly welcome.
Fisk Bulldogs head coach Jeremiah Crutcher reflected on the loss, saying:
“Today, we lost a leader on and off the court. Andre ‘Dre’ — a young, bright, gentle young man — was unjustly taken from this world.”
The tragedy occurred on the evening of Sunday, January 11, 2026. Dre was driving a white Nissan Sentra with two friends, returning to campus after volunteering at a gymnastics meet hosted by Fisk University at the Nashville Fairgrounds. The mood was light and ordinary — until a dark-colored sedan pulled alongside them on the left.
In a sudden, fatal moment, gunfire erupted. Multiple shots rang out. Dre was struck in the head. His vehicle slowed, spun, and collided with a red pickup truck. His two friends were unharmed. Dre was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition, where he passed away on January 12, leaving behind an immeasurable void.
The motive remains unknown. Authorities believe the incident may have been random violence or an act of road rage. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate, noting the suspect vehicle may have windshield damage from shattered glass at the scene. The public has been urged to submit any dashcam footage through Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
Andre’s family is enduring unimaginable pain. They described him as the light of their lives — a devoted son, a man of deep faith, and someone who lived to help others. Even in tragedy, they chose to donate Dre’s organs to save lives, a decision that reflects the generosity and compassion that defined who he was.
Andre Bell was not just a victim of violence. He was a symbol of kindness, hope, and unrealized potential. In a world often filled with chaos, Dre’s story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the moments we too often take for granted.
He is gone, but his legacy — his smile, his service, and his unwavering spirit — will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
Rest in peace, Andre “Dre” Bell. 💔
May justice be served, and may the world become safer so no other family has to endure such loss.
