Former Eagles Super Bowl Champion Safety Wants to Return to Philadelphia After Turbulent Season with the Bears

Philadelphia, PA — Even as rosters change and careers take players across the league, the pull of Philadelphia remains strong for many who have worn midnight green.

For one former Eagles defensive back, the message about a possible return could not be clearer.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who spent two separate stints with the Eagles, recently spoke openly about the idea of coming back to Philadelphia, expressing deep appreciation for the city and organization where he played some of the best football of his career.

“Philadelphia is home for me. The energy, the fans, the locker room, it’s different. If there’s a chance to run it back, I’m ready to give everything I have for this city again.”

Gardner-Johnson played for the Eagles in 2022 and again in 2024, with both seasons ending in Super Bowl appearances and a championship victory in his most recent run.

During his time in Philly, he recorded six interceptions in each stint and was a key playmaker in the secondary.

Across his Eagles tenure, he totaled 126 tackles, 20 pass deflections, seven tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, one sack, one forced fumble, and a pick six, cementing himself as one of the most impactful defensive backs on the roster during those seasons.

The Eagles enter the offseason with questions at safety, as Reed Blankenship and Marcus Epps are both free agents, while young safety Andrew Mukuba is recovering from a late season ankle injury.

Those uncertainties could make a reunion scenario more realistic depending on how free agency unfolds.

Gardner-Johnson spent last season bouncing between multiple teams, including the Texans, Ravens, and Bears, but his connection to Philadelphia has remained strong despite a rocky departure that included public criticism of general manager Howie Roseman — comments he has since walked back and apologized for.

While nothing is guaranteed, the idea of bringing Gardner-Johnson back would likely be welcomed by many Eagles fans who remember his intensity, playmaking ability, and swagger on the field.

As the offseason approaches, the possibility of a reunion remains one of the more intriguing storylines to watch in Philadelphia, especially with a player who clearly still feels a strong bond with the city and its fan base.
