Panic in Minnesota! Florio: Vikings on the Brink of QB Catastrophe — Forced to Start QB3 or Make Desperate Trade. – SSS

The Minnesota Vikings are staring down a quarterback crisis as they prepare for a critical Thursday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers to kick off Week 8. With a short week and injuries plaguing their top quarterbacks, head coach Kevin O’Connell is facing tough decisions that could shape the team’s playoff hopes.

On Tuesday, O’Connell named Carson Wentz as the starter, despite Wentz’s recent struggles and a lingering left shoulder issue. Wentz, who was described as “horrible” in Sunday’s game and underwhelming during the team’s recent trip to Europe, was listed as a limited participant in a Monday practice that didn’t even take place. Meanwhile, rookie J.J. McCarthy, the team’s highly-touted first-round pick, remains sidelined with ankle and Achilles injuries that have kept him out of action for over a year. Questions about McCarthy’s readiness linger, with doubts about whether he’s had enough practice time to take on starting duties.

Enter Max Brosmer, the undrafted rookie free agent (UDFA) and former Minnesota Gopher, who has been turning heads in his limited NFL exposure. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio suggests that Brosmer, who has served as Wentz’s backup during McCarthy’s absence, could be a viable option. “Everything we’ve seen from Brosmer leads us to believe he could operate O’Connell’s offense in a way that Wentz cannot,” Florio noted. With both Wentz and McCarthy listed as limited, Brosmer’s consistent health and impressive showings make him a potential stopgap starter if the Vikings’ hand is forced.

The quarterback situation is dire enough that Florio has floated a more dramatic possibility: a potential reunion with Kirk Cousins. With the trade deadline looming on November 4, 2025, the Vikings could consider bringing back Cousins, who thrived in Minnesota before moving to the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons’ current starter, Michael Penix Jr., is day-to-day with a bone bruise, which might make them more open to trading Cousins. For the Vikings, this could be a last-ditch effort to salvage a season teetering on the edge. A loss to the Chargers would drop Minnesota to 3-4, putting their playoff hopes in serious jeopardy, especially after missing the postseason in back-to-back years—a streak they haven’t broken since 2008 and 2009.

The decision to bypass re-signing veterans Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones in favor of the untested McCarthy is looking increasingly questionable, especially as both quarterbacks are thriving elsewhere. Florio points out that Wentz’s recent performances have pushed his “chariot-pumpkin meter” into the orange, signaling a lack of confidence in his ability to lead a roster built to win now. If Brosmer steps in, he’s unlikely to be an instant star, but he could provide a steadier hand than Wentz. However, a Cousins reunion might be the Vikings’ best shot at stabilizing the position and keeping their playoff dreams alive.

With the Chargers game looming and a tough matchup against the Detroit Lions the following week, the Vikings are running out of time to address their quarterback woes. Whether it’s turning to the untested Brosmer or making a bold trade for Cousins, Minnesota’s next move could determine whether they salvage the season or spiral into catastrophe.
