The NFL didn’t even have time to reset the news cycle.

Less than 24 hours after the Chicago Bears released their $72 million linebacker in a cap-saving move, the Philadelphia Eagles wasted no time making their play.

And when the dust settled, it was Philly walking away with the most explosive defender suddenly available on the market.

The Bears’ decision was about money. The Eagles’ response was about opportunity.

Chicago cleared significant cap space by parting ways with a veteran who had just posted 112 tackles, four interceptions and nine passes defended in 2025.

At only 27 years old, he remained one of the most complete linebackers in football, particularly against the run where he graded among the league’s best.

Multiple teams were expected to show interest. Denver had cap flexibility. Minnesota had a need. But Philadelphia had urgency.

With Nakobe Dean’s contract situation unresolved and questions lingering about depth in the middle of the defense, the Eagles front office moved quickly, aggressively and quietly. By the time other contenders were preparing offers, Philly had already closed the door.

The name at the center of the storm: Tremaine Edmunds.

A former first-round pick entering his prime, Edmunds brings elite range, size and coverage instincts to a defense that has been searching for stability at linebacker. His ability to diagnose plays and disrupt passing lanes instantly elevates the second level of the Eagles’ front seven.

For a team that struggled at times against the run in 2025, adding a downhill, sideline-to-sideline presence could be the difference between good and dominant.

Head coach Nick Sirianni didn’t hide his excitement when asked about the move.

“Talent like this doesn’t hit the market often,” Sirianni said. “What stands out about him isn’t just the physical tools. It’s the football IQ, the leadership and the way he affects every snap. In our system, with our front, I believe his ceiling is even higher.”

League insiders say the deal came together quickly once the Bears made the cut official. The Eagles recognized that waiting even a day could invite a bidding war. Instead, they acted with conviction.

And just like that, Philadelphia may have turned a cap casualty into a cornerstone.
