In a video captured by Gregg Bell of the Tacoma New Tribune, Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak explained how an oblique injury could hamper a quarterback. In the same video, he also noted how Drew Lock got reps with the first team on Jan. 15.
“With any injury you just want to know what the significance is,” Kubiak said. “I’ll let coach talk about those things.
The timing is brutal because the Seahawks are set to host the 49ers on Saturday, Jan. 17, at Lumen Field with a trip to the NFC Championship Game on the line.
Darnold said later he expects to play, but also took it easy in practice and did not want to push it. In a video recorded by Brady Henderson of ESPN, Darnold admitted he “felt a little something.” He said he’s never had oblique issues, and then said “it’s fun.” He estimated his chances of not playing would be closer to 0%. The Seahawks’ official injury report added Darnold with an oblique issue, and the team listed him as questionable for Saturday.
That designation matters because “questionable” isn’t a guarantee either way, it’s essentially the NFL’s signal that a player has a real chance to play, but the team needs more time (and usually another practice/medical check) before making the final call closer to kickoff.It also explains why this is instantly a headline story: playoff weeks are all about certainty. When the starting quarterback lands on the injury report late in the week, it creates immediate pressure on the entire game plan.
If Darnold is limited at all, Seattle’s offensive approach can change fast.
Oblique injuries are tricky for quarterbacks because they can affect rotational movement, throwing mechanics, rolling out, and even taking contact. That can impact everything from deep shots to play-action timing, especially against a 49ers defense that’s built to generate pressure.
The other key piece: Seattle has been prepping all week for a division rival they know extremely well. This isn’t a Wild Card “new opponent” situation. This is a 49ers team that will absolutely test the quarterback early, and any limitation becomes part of the chess match.
If Darnold can’t go (or can’t finish), the Seahawks would need to pivot to their next-man-up quarterback plan. Seattle’s injury report photo gallery from practice this week included QB Jalen Milroe working as well, underscoring that the team is preparing multiple scenarios.
This season Darnold was named to his second consecutive Pro Bowl team, while guiding a team to a 14-win regular season record for a consecutive season, too. He completed 323-of-477 (67%) passes for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns, while throwing 14 interceptions.
Seattle earned the NFC’s top seed and a bye, which is supposed to be the advantage week, extra rest, extra prep, home field, everything.
Instead, the Seahawks are heading into the divisional round with the kind of late-week uncertainty teams dread most: the health of the quarterback.
The 49ers, meanwhile, arrive battle-tested after advancing from Wild Card weekend, setting up a rivalry game with the stakes cranked all the way up.
For Seattle, the short version is simple: if Darnold is cleared and close to full strength, the Seahawks can run their normal offense. If he’s limited — or inactive — it becomes one of the biggest “what now?” storylines of the entire weekend.
